MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Engineering decisions,
made visible.

Ten pump-related case studies covering mechanical design, fluid systems, fabrication and verification. Explore the constraints, calculations and design decisions, with the basis and limits of each technical study identified.

Project accounts and technical studies

Work-experience accounts describe the reported design context and approach. Added models and worked calculations explain the engineering using the stated inputs. A proposed verification method is distinct from a completed solver run or measured test result. The SOLIDWORKS Press Tool Assembly is a separate educational study.

Shaft Redesign

35 mm · reinforced shaft span

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 01

Shaft Redesign: More Stiffness. Same Interfaces.

A larger impeller increased overhung loading and deflection near the mechanical seal. The redesign had to preserve the existing bearing housing, coupling and seal.

Cavitation Control

3.6 → 5.1 m · calculated NPSH available

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 02

Cavitation Control: More Suction Margin. Steadier Flow.

A constrained pump installation needed more suction margin at low tank level while retaining a duty of 60 m³/h at 30 m head.

Pressure Integrity

Analytical checks · FEA and test methodology

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 03

Pressure Integrity: One Casing. Three Checks.

A revised centrifugal-pump casing needed verification for higher-pressure service, particularly around the discharge-flange transition.

Pump Performance

38 → 45 m · reported head at 150 m³/h

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 04

Pump Performance: Find the Loss. Recover the Head.

A centrifugal pump ordered for 150 m³/h at 45 m head delivered only 38 m on its initial test.

Precision Alignment

Same footprint · existing jigs and interfaces retained

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 05

Precision Alignment: Flatter Mounts. Same Footprint.

Weld distortion in a pump base frame was reducing mounting-pad flatness and moving the pump and motor out of alignment.

06 / Systems engineeringCalculated cycling comparison for 80 and 200 litre pressure tanks
Booster Stability

80 → 200 L · pressure-tank capacity

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 06

Booster Stability: Fewer Starts. Smoother Pressure.

A duplex booster package showed frequent starts, pressure surges and repeated seal failures, especially at low demand.

07 / Safety by designFolded coupling-guard design concept between motor and pump
Safe Changeovers

2 mm · galvanized guard sheet

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 07

Safe Changeovers: Guard the Coupling. Control the Energy.

A sewage-pump test stand had an exposed rotating coupling and no formal isolation sequence for stored pressure.

Wastewater Reliability

Full lifecycle · problem definition through field review

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 08

Wastewater Reliability: From Recurring Failures to Retrofit.

A sewage pump handling fibrous wastewater experienced recurring clogging and seal failures.

Impeller Design Review

Before release · design concern identified and resolved

ATLAS ELECTRICALS · DESIGN EXPERIENCECASE 09

Impeller Design Review: Find the Risk Before Release.

An independent review of a proposed impeller revision investigated whether the change could introduce new reliability problems.
