Lubrication: Oils, Greases & Machinery Reliability

Does NLGI 2 mean the grease has an ISO VG 2 base oil?

No. NLGI 2 describes grease consistency. ISO VG describes the base oil's kinematic viscosity at 40°C. They are different properties.

Why can adding too much grease damage a bearing?

Excess grease can churn, increase temperature and pressure, and potentially damage seals or alter lubricant performance.

Can two greases safely be mixed because they have the same colour and NLGI grade?

No. Colour and consistency do not establish compatibility. Base oils, thickeners and additive packages must be considered using supplier guidance and, where necessary, compatibility testing.
